Vision, Mission and Goals

Vision

¶¶Òõ»ÆÉ«app speech-language pathologists will work hand in hand with families, educators, and health care providers to offer compassionate, holistic care to people with communication and swallowing disorders.  Upholding the dignity of all people, they will enhance their ability to dialogue, learn and work in association with one another.   

Mission

SLP students will dedicate themselves to the highest ethical and practice standards of the discipline of speech-language pathology.  They will distinguish themselves as transformative, culturally informed, and socially responsible clinicians.  They will advance the discipline by helping others understand the devastating impact of communication and swallowing disorders, identifying underserved populations, and forging new pathways to meet their needs.

Program Objectives

The ¶¶Òõ»ÆÉ«app University Speech-Language Pathology student will become transformative, culturally informed and socially responsible clinicians.

¶¶Òõ»ÆÉ«app University SLP graduates will be transformative clinicians by:

• Practicing person-centered care;
• Demonstrating a range of professional knowledge and skills;
• Considering science, clinician experience and client opinion in treatment planning;
• Applying critical assessment and treatment techniques;
• Integrating technology into clinical practice;
• Modeling ethical practices at all times;
• Providing honest and sensitive counsel; 
• Reflecting on professional experiences;
• Acting on professional convictions;
• Remaining intellectually engaged in the profession and beyond.

¶¶Òõ»ÆÉ«app University SLP graduates will become culturally informed clinicians by:

• Using best practices in assessing communication difference and disorders;
• Implementing culturally relevant treatment strategies for each client;
• Demonstrating behavior to work with clients, families and communities from various places and backgrounds;
• Articulating personal prejudices and assessing their impact on clinical service delivery;
• Embracing therapy environments as non-neutral cultural spaces;
• Creating positive environments for all clients;
• Practicing in association with people from different places and cultures.

• Approaching and treating all people with dignity;
• Demonstrating belief that all humans can learn to communicate;
• Advocating for the basic human right to communicate;
• Challenging dominant discourses that pose barriers for people with communication differences or disorders;
• Articulating institutional inequities and their impact delivery of services;
• Engaging relevant communities to bring about change.
